Easter Monday each year, the canton of Valais hosts a cow fight. The purpose of the event is to determine which cow will lead the herd up the mountain.
Cows naturally fight to determine dominance in the herd, however the event of ‘Cow Fighting’ has become a popularized spectator sport complete with bleachers, concession stands and an entry fee.
None of the cows are harmed during the event; their horns are dulled, and the confrontation is majorly just two cows pushing against each other. The ‘losing cow’ is the one that back downs first.
Overall the afternoon was unforgettable and enjoyable. The sun was strong and the variety of festive foods including bratwurst, raclette, cotton candy, and ice cream made the day.
